Prompted by state garden clubs, the states transportation department started the Wildflower Program in 1985 to entertain travelers as they pass through the state. By 1997 it had grown from 12 to 3,000 acres. Annual and perennial species are paired to present long-lasting color. Annuals, which bloom the first season in new beds, immediately catch the eye of motorists. Annual species planted include multicolored Toadflax, the bright orange California poppy, the brilliant pink Catchfly, the tall yellow Plains Coroepsis, the fall-blooming yellow, orange and red Sulphur Cosmos, and more.
