At the time, it was estimated that between 1993 and 1997, worldwide consumption of flowers and plants could grow from 68 billion to 78 billion guilders, noted the Flower Council of Holland. Europe is still an important market for Dutch-cut flowers. The greatest rival is local production, although other international exporters are a significant challenge in Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the U.S. and Japan. The international market for flowers and plants still offers the Dutch industry plenty of opportunity to maintain and strengthen its position. Although opportunities are not as spectacular as we have been used to, there is still tremendous hope for the Dutch product.FACTS AND FIGURES FROM THIS 1994 ISSUE:38%is the market share captured by the Dutch flower business in 1992, up from 34% in 1989.21%is Hollands share of the pot plant market in 1994.85%of the Flower Council of Hollands annual budget goes toward the core flower-producing countries in Europe.75is the numbers of years that the Southern Seedsmens Association cel-ebrated at its annual convention.237,000is the number of acres of Georgias total soybean acreage (600,000) that were planted with certi-fied seed in 1993about 39%.86/ SEEDWORLD.COMJANUARY 2020'
