STANDING COMMITTEE RECOMMENDS AAFC CLOSURES BE
REVERSED
A new report from the House of Commons Standing
Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food is intensifying calls
to reverse planned Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC)
research cuts. The committee’s report recommends that Ottawa
pause and reverse research station closures, preserve critical
scientific expertise, and conduct more rigorous analysis of the
economic and scientific impacts of the cuts. Witnesses stressed
the importance of maintaining regional research capacity,
long-term field trials, and public-interest research programs
that cannot easily be replaced by the private sector. While the
recommendations have been welcomed by many agricultural
sector, the report has also reignited broader discussions about
the future of plant breeding in Canada.

Breeding Groups Push for Greater Investment, Technology and
Collaboration
A coalition of wheat and barley breeding organizations
(Canadian Wheat Research Coalition, the Canadian Barley
Research Coalition, Seeds Canada, University of Manitoba,
University of Saskatchewan Crop Development Centre and
the Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences
at the University of Alberta) has released a new vision aimed at
strengthening crop innovation and ensuring long-term value for
farmers. The plan calls for a modernized breeding system that
encourages collaboration among public and private breeders,
supports stable investment in research and accelerates the devel
opment of improved varieties. The groups hope to create a more
resilient and innovation-driven breeding ecosystem that delivers
better outcomes for producers.
