BUSINESS NEWS Advanta Seeds and Texas A&M AgriLife Research announced a new partnership for seed technol- ogy research and development with the establishment of a new biotech research station. The new research station will enhance the areas of mutual benefit between these two organizations. These include the breeding of sorghum, tropical and subtropical corn, tomatoes and hot peppers, as well as applying molecular mark- ers to plant breeding in sunflower, canola, wheat and rice, among other crops. Monsanto Company reached a global licensing agreement with the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard for the use of the CRISPR-Cas genome-editing technology in agriculture. Under the agreement, the Broad Institute grants Monsanto a worldwide non-exclusive license for agricul- ture applications of the CRISPR- Cas technology. Additional terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Monsanto Company and Dow AgroSciences LLC announced a non-exclusive global option and licensing agreement on Dow AgroSciences’ EXZACT Precision Technology Platform for research and commercial development of new crop solutions across Monsanto Company’s research portfolio. EXZACT technology, which Dow AgroSciences has developed under an exclusive license and collaboration agree- ment in plants with Sangamo BioSciences, Inc., facilitates the creation of crop varieties and lines having improved traits. Beck’s announced it has pur- chased the former BASF Seed Research Facility on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. Built in 2012, the 13,000 square foot facility includes offices, laboratory space, stor- age and drying for corn breeding nurseries, as well as agricultural equipment needed to grow seed corn and research-focused plant materials. Bayer and West Central Distribution announced the intro- duction of Redigo 480 plus Trilex, a combination of fungicide seed treatments for soybeans offered exclusively through West Central Distribution. Redigo 480 is a seed treatment fungicide from Bayer for control of seed and soil-borne dis- ease on soybeans and other crops. As part of its "One Nufarm" strategy, Nufarm realigns and unites resources to enhance its broad seed treatment portfolio in North America. The Nufarm seed treatment and crop protection teams will join forces to expand their footprint with distribution and seed company partners. Also, Nufarm recently opened doors to its new seed treatment formula- tions lab in Alsip, Illinois. The for- mulations lab will stand alongside Nufarm’s manufacturing facility, which was constructed in 2012. The Agricultural Sciences divi- sion of Dow reported third quarter sales of $1.2 billion, up 6 percent versus the year-ago period. Price and volume each rose 3 percent. Strong demand conditions in Latin America drove double-digit sales gains in seeds, with price and volume both rising by double-dig- its. Corn seeds sales nearly tripled primarily on double-digit volume and price growth in Latin America as the business increased share and met early season demand. Soybean sales nearly tripled as well. BioConsortia Inc. has raised a total of $12 million for future growth. Last week, BioConsortia closed an $8 million equity round of investment financed by exist- ing investors, Khosla Ventures and Otter Capital, and earlier in the year raised $4 million of venture debt from Square 1 Bank, a divi- sion of Pacific Western Bank. Chromatin Inc., an agriculture technology company, has signed an exclusive license agreement for unique sorghum genetic stocks developed by Agrigenetics Inc., an affiliate of Dow AgroSciences LLC. Under the agreement, Chromatin is deploying Dow AgroSciences’ sorghum technology to launch new, market-leading products in multiple key sorghum markets outside of the United States. PEOPLE NEWS Wyffels Hybrids Inc. welcomes Bruce Howison as its vice presi- dent of sales and marketing. Howison brings years of seed industry experience along with strong analytical and financial leadership to the company. He was most recently vice president of sales for AgReliant Genetics. After 42 years of service, Paul Schickler, president of DuPont Pioneer, has elected to retire effective Jan. 2, 2017. Schickler began his career with Pioneer in 1974. Since joining the company, he served in a variety of finance and administrative leadership roles throughout the business, includ- ing leading the business in Latin America from 1999-2002. He was subsequently named vice presi- dent of International Operations, and in October 2007, he was named president of DuPont Pioneer. He is a member of the DuPont Operating Team. The 2016 World Food Prize was awarded to Maria Andrade, Howarth Bouis, Jan Low and Robert Mwanga on Oct. 13. Andrade, Low and Mwanga of the International Potato Center (CIP), which has had sweet potatoes in its research mandate since 1988, were honored for their work developing the single most successful example
