A look at seed industry developments around the globe.
Argentina streamlines
GMO regulations, Peru
clarifies gene-editing
biosafety rules.
STATUS ARGENTINA
Argentina has updated
and simplified its regulatory
framework for genetically
modified organisms used in
agricultural, agri-food, and
agro-industrial activities.
The reform introduces
more precise technical criteria,
shorter evaluation timelines,
lower costs, and fewer admin
istrative requirements. It is
intended to improve regula
tory clarity, increase invest
ment predictability, and reflect
scientific and technological
advances in biotechnology.
The updated framework
organizes procedures accord
ing to organism type and
intended use while main
taining oversight of agro
ecosystem safety, food and
feed suitability and export
protection. Argentina has
regulated agricultural GMOs
since 1991 and has approved
134 genetically modified
products since 1996, including
38. The government says the
changes are aimed at sup
porting innovation, investment
and Argentina’s leadership in
production-oriented biotech
nology.
STATUS PERU
Peru’s Ministry of the
Environment has approved
new guidelines for evaluating
Modified Living Organisms
developed through emerging
biotechnology tools, includ
ing gene editing technologies
such as CRISPR. The measure,
enacted through Ministerial
Resolution No. D000068-
2026-MINAM-DM, establishes
scientific and regulatory cri
teria for determining whether
gene-edited organisms
should be classified as MVOs.
The move modernizes
Peru’s biosafety framework
while the country’s morato
rium on cultivating transgenic
organisms remains in effect
until 2035. The guidelines
allow authorities to assess
organisms case by case, dis
tinguishing between genetic
changes involving foreign
DNA and precise edits that
may resemble naturally occur
ring mutations. SW
