NRGene’s platform, GenoMAGIC, was developed by a unique mix of highly experi- enced algorithm designers, software engineers, plant breeders and plant geneticists and is used by seed companies and major academic and research institutions around the world. The Climate Corporation, a subsidiary of Monsanto, unveiled more than 35 projects in its research and development pipe- line. The company also announced plans to expand its Climate FieldView digital agriculture platform into new international geographies over the next few years. “The digital ag industry continues to accelerate rapidly as more farmers experience the value data-driven digital tools can bring their operations,” says Mike Stern, CEO for The Climate Corporation. Pipeline highlights include seed and planting product selection, fertility prescriptions and field health and disease insights. Paramount Seeds, founded in 1992 by Glen Kaufman and located in Stuart, Fla., announced that it was taking on a new shareholder. Richard Blakely, a long-time employee of the company, is now part owner. In addition to his current logistics responsibilities, Blakely will also be responsible for all web- based sales, working with suppliers and managing the com- pany seed supply. Monsanto Company announced 2017 updates on progress made across its research and development pipeline during the past year. The company’s platforms support solutions that reduce the footprint of global ag production through better harvests, protect harvests from increasing threats and deliver continuous improvement to global ag production. A few of these components include the BioAg Alliance, Climate FieldView and Higher-Yielding Corn. Additionally, there’s the continued development of NemaStrike Technology, research to promote the health of honeybees, next-generation insect and weed control technologies, and research that aims to curb the effects of disease on vegetables and row crops, including Downy Mildew-Resistant Lettuce and the DEKALB Disease Shield TM corn hybrids platform. Syngenta chose NRGene’s GenoMAGIC cloud-based software for more comprehensive evaluations to accelerate trait discov- ery and breeding across diverse crops. The GenoMAGIC soft- ware analyzes unlimited volumes of genomic data, identifying broad sequence polymorphisms and haplotypes. This enables scientists and breeders to easily relate genomic sequences with beneficial traits, making genomic selection and trait mapping much more productive. Data use is accelerated, making breeding both faster and more cost effective. Monsanto reached a new global licens- ing agreement with the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard for the use of the novel CRISPR-Cpf1 genome-editing technology. The CRISPR-Cpf1 system has potential to be a simpler and more pre- cise tool for making targeted improve- ments in a cell’s DNA when compared to the CRISPR-Cas9. Ball Horticultural Company announced the acquisition of a majority of shares in Danish breeding company Ex-Plant A/S. Ex-Plant will become a part of Ball’s PanAmerican Seed division upon the close of this transaction, which was anticipated in January.
