This year’s gathering was all about breathing new life into the seed industry as we know it. For starters, resolutions were passed to update the Canadian Regulations and Procedures for Pedigreed Seed Crop Production - also known as Circular 6. One of the resolutions pertained to developing standards for all cannabis — not just industrial hemp — in anticipation of the federal government’s move towards legalizing marijuana while the other related to the modernization of Circular 6 in its entirety. Both CSGA and members feel it is time to update the document to improve accessibility with, for example, a web-based digital document, to review, evaluate and change some of the standards which may be outdated and to re-write sections to better explain and increase understanding of requirements. A special meeting of CSGA’s Standards and Circular 6 Committee also met to discuss priorities for changes to the rules. CSGA’s efforts to reposition itself while undergoing a Strategic Plan Exercise was a major topic of discussion, as was the Seed Synergy project, which will attempt to have the seed industry in Canada speak with one voice when it comes to regulatory issues. With members of the CSTA, CSI, CSAAC, CPTA, and CropLife Canada also present, it was a good chance for members of Canada’s six major seed industry organizations to talk about how they can work more effectively together when it comes to shaping the country’s regulatory environment for seed. Whilelotsofimportantbusinesswascoveredatthisyear’sAGMtheeventwasalsooneofthelargestgatherings in recent years, with several spouses and families attending. The social aspects of the AGM provided a great opportunity for growers and their families to network. We were fortunate to join with SeCan in celebrating their 40th anniversary, and seed growers had a terrific time marking the occasion with SeCan staff and board members. The annual awards banquet recognized the contributions of seed growers and industry who have advanced seed production. Craig Riddell, Gerald Girodat, Randy Court and John Smith (posthumously) received the Robertson Association Award while Dr. Anita Brûlé-Babel, Glen Green, Harold Rudy and Don Pollock were honored with the Honorary Life Award. The evening was capped off with magic and illusions by Dean Gunnarson. Last — but definitely not least — was Olympic gold medalist and Amazing Race Canada host Jon Montgomery, who closed the event with a rousing speech about how he succeeded in the Olympics by staying strong and focused on his goals. It was a fitting message for a meeting that was all about invigorating the country’s most important industry — seed and agriculture. We hope to see you next year, July 9-11, 2017, at our annual meeting in Halifax, Nova Scotia, which will be held jointly with the CSTA!
