WHAT FOREIGN LANGUAGE DID YOU STUDY IN SCHOOL? HAVE YOU USED IT SINCE? 1. French. Un petit peu! 2. Growing up I went to Ukrainian school — always dreading class, until I learned how unique and special it was to speak another language. I treasured the moments I spoke to my grandparents in their native tongue. I still have sharp skills and hope to share them with my children one day. 3. I studied French, and I liked it so much that I majored in it! 4. Besides Dutch, I learned English, German and French in high school (and Latin and Greek …). I still use all three modern ones today. At university and later on, I did additional courses in Spanish, Russian and Mandarin. And I married an Italian wife, so Italian goes quite well, also! 5. One year of Spanish. All I remember is “Prefiero patatas fritas,” I prefer fried potatoes. 6. I am woefully and willfully ignorant of other languages — the benefit of being an English speaker.
