During the American Seed Trade Association’s CSS 2016 & Seed Expo in Chicago, the National Council of Commercial Plant Breeders recognized Allen Van Deynze with the Public Plant Breeding Award. This award is given to a person who has made outstanding basic contributions to the advancement of plant breeding and genetics in the public sector. Van Deynze serves as research director for the University of California, Davis, Seed Biotechnology Center, which is a founding member of the African Orphan Crops Consortium. Van Deynze was unable to accept the award in person as he was away working on a project with the consortium. Canada’s leadership in protecting new plant varieties has received international recognition with the election of Anthony Parker, Canada’s Commissioner of Plant Breeders’ Rights, to the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV). UPOV members recognized Parker’s knowledge and experience in plant variety protection matters and his role in the ratification of the 1991 Act of the UPOV Convention by Canada in 2015. Parker played an instrumental role in the implementation of the 2015 Agricultural Growth Act, which amended Canada’s Plant Breeder’s Rights Act, bringing it into line with the UPOV ’91 Convention. PRODUCT NEWS DuPont and Monsanto announced today that they have agreed to offer DuPont Lumivia insecticide seed treatment under the Acceleron brand in Eastern Canada for the 2017 sales season. Lumivia insecticide seed treatment, part of the DuPont Lumigen seed sense portfolio, is the first insecticide seed treatment technology in Canada using chlorantraniliprole, a reduced-risk active ingredient that will give growers a tool to help control damage caused by a broad spectrum of pests. “We are pleased to provide Canadian corn farmers with seed treatment options to fill pest control gaps,” explained Daniel Samphir, Seed Applied Solutions marketing manager, Monsanto Canada. According to DuPont, Lumivia insecticide seed treatment provides immediate and long-lasting protection of corn seeds and seedlings, which translates to uniform, healthy stands and increased yield potential through improved early season vigour. Bayer has launched ILeVO seed treatment, the first soybean seed treatment registered for Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS) in Canada. Difficult to identify and often misdiagnosed, SDS results in average annual yield loss of about 20 per cent, but can cause losses of up to 60 per cent in a growing season. To date, there have been no seed treatment solutions available for SDS in Canada. “ILeVO gives growers a way to protect against SDS, a yield robbing pest,” says David Kikkert, crop and campaign marketing manager, soybeans and pulses at Bayer. “As the first seed treatment solution available for SDS in Canada, it’s a revolutionary new way to help protect soybean crops and the growers’ bottom line.” ILeVO has activity on the Fusarium virguliforme fungus. The effectiveness of the product has been demonstrated through field trials in the U.S. and Canada over the past five years, including third-party trials with OMAFRA and the University of Guelph.
