NATIONAL RUSTY PATCHED BUMBLE BEE PROPOSED “ENDANGERED” On Sept. 22, The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposed to list the rusty patched bumble bee as endangered under the Endangered Species Act. If listed, it would be the first bee species listed as an endan- gered species in the conti- nental United States. Public comments will be accepted through Nov. 21. BIOTECH REGULATORY FRAMEWORK GETS ATTENTION On Sept. 16, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and U.S. Department of Agriculture released two documents to modernize the federal regula- tory system for biotechnol- ogy products. This action aims to help ensure public confidence in the regulatory system for biotechnology products and improve the transparency, predictability, coordination and efficiency of the system. EPA APPROVES AGRISURE 3120 E-Z Syngenta’s Agrisure 3120 E-Z Refuge, a new stack, has received registration approval from the Environmental Protection Agency. It offers above-ground insect control, featuring two modes of action against corn borer and control of ear-feeding insects, with an integrated refuge product. Agrisure 3120 E-Z Refuge will be available for 2017 planting. USDA APPROVES ARCTIC FUJI APPLE Okanagan Specialty Fruits’ third nonbrowning Arctic apple variety, the Arctic Fuji, has been deregulated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. Arctic apples have been improved through a reduction of the enzyme polyphenol oxidase, the primary cause of browning in fruit. GE POTATO LINES GET PRELIMINARY DEREGULATION The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service extended preliminary deregulation to two lines of genetically engineered potatoes developed by J.R. Simplot Company for late blight resistance, low acryla- mide potential, reduced black spot bruising and reduced sugars. APHIS previously reviewed and deregulated these GE traits in other GE potatoes. It has prepared a plant pest risk similarity assessment, finding no signifi- cant impact, and a preliminary determination of non-regu- lated status that is available for 30 days for public review and comment. INTERNATIONAL DELEGATION AIMS TO IMPROVE CHINESE REGULATORY APPROVAL PROCESS The National Corn Growers Association met with offi- cials from China’s Ministry of Agriculture to discuss the need to improve the synchroniza- tion process of the regulatory systems and the importance U.S. farmers place on the avail- ability of new technologies. EU APPROVES NEW BIOTECH TRAITS The European Union approved three biotech soybean traits for import and processing. The approved traits include the Roundup Ready 2 Xtend dicamba-tolerant soybean and Vistive Gold high oleic soy- bean products from Monsanto, and the Balance GT FG72 soybean from Bayer. The three soybean events received posi- tive scientific opinions from the European Food Safety Agency more than a year ago, and had been waiting for final approval by the EU Commission. SW
