A scientific breakthrough on the DNA sequencing of the groundnut (also known as peanut) promises the development of improved groundnut varieties with enhanced traits such as increased pod and oil yield, drought and heat tolerance and greater dis- ease resistance. A team of 51 scientists from 9 institutes in China, India, the United States and Australia, including the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi- Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), have decoded the complete DNA sequencing of the ancestor of the groundnut, the diploid A-genome (Arachis duranensis). Other significant traits this could help develop include aflatoxin-free, nutri- tion-rich and allergen-free varieties. PRODUCT NEWS Syngenta has received registration France for the Elatus Plus which is based on the novel carboxamide fungicide Solatenol. This is the first European registration for a Solatenol based product and will allow sales of Eltus Plus in France this year, in time for the 2016- 17 growing season. Regulatory submissions for Solatenol products are under review through- out Europe with further regulatory approvals expected in due course. NewLeaf Symbiotics has announced that both the European and Japanese Patent Offices will grant patents on the company’s foundational production process. In 2015, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office granted U.S. Patent No. 9,181,541 broadly covering NewLeaf’s proprietary production technology. The technology disclosed in the patents per- mits rapid, cost-effective production of large quantities of Pink-Pigmented Facultative Methylotrophs (PPFM), a naturally occur- ring beneficial bacteria which can improve yield and pest tolerance in treated crops. Exosect Ltd., has made a breakthrough in the systemic delivery of insecticide. Acetamiprid, a neonicotinoid, was successfully delivered as a seed treatment using Exosect’s proprietary formulation platform, Entostat. The systemic activity of the formulation delivers control of aphids feeding on plant foliage. No phytotox- icity was observed. Acetamiprid is a neonicoti- noid insecticide that exhibits very low toxicity to bees, however, it has not currently been developed as a seed treatment. DuPont Pioneer introduces Accelerated Yield Technology 4.0 (AYT 4.0) — a technol- ogy that allows researchers to more than double the annual rate of genetic gain of soybean vari- eties in its research pipeline. The new technol- ogy will also help reduce the time it takes to bring new soybean products to market. Dow AgroSciences has agreed to license Plextein — a high throughput method for detecting and quantitating multiple proteins in plants — to EPL Bio Analytical Services (EPL BAS). The non-exclusive license agreement grants EPL BAS access to patented intellectual property targeting improvements in the speed, quality and efficiency of protein quantitation in plants by mass spectrometry.
