48 GERMINATION.CA JULY 2019 5INFLUENCERSWHOHAVE MADEADIFFERENCE The Canadian Seed Growers’ Association honours its 2019 award winners at its AGM in Whistler, B.C. They all have one thing in common — making their industry better. Compiled by Marc Zienkiewicz Ed and Lori Hadland TALK ABOUT FAMILY TRADITION. Ed Hadland is the third-generation Select seed grower on the family farm near Fort St. John, B.C. He is honoured to join the ranks of Robertson Associates that include his father and grandfather. Ed seemed almost destined to build his life around agriculture. He met future wife Lori at Fairview College where they both studied agriculture. They were married in 1990 and took over the farm in 1991. Ed and Lori continue to operate the farm, producing pedigreed seed of cereals, peas and several grass crops, as well as com- mercial grains and canola. Ed’s involvement in the industry is sig- nificant. He’s served on the Canadian Seed Growers’ Association B.C. branch since 1991 and was a national board member for several years. He has been a part of the community’s seed cleaning co-op board and other local farm groups. Lori grew up on a mixed farm at Hines Creek, Alta. and learned the art of roguing on the neighbouring seed farm. She took on leadership roles during the many years their kids were involved in 4H sheep, swine and beef. 2019 ROBERTSON ASSOCIATE AWARD WINNERS Doug Heaman FROM A SMALL PIECE OF LAND, DOUG HEAMAN’S BUILT A LOT.
