The activities of the ISTA Advanced Technologies Committee (ATC) align with this mission and help in enabling the needs of the seed sector to be met. The ATC aims to explore the availability, applicability and development of advanced technologies, as well as to inform the ISTA community about these innovations. ATC initiates bridges between the worlds of research, development and technology providers, and the ISTA community. In a rapidly changing, data-driven society, the need for understanding new technologies and their (potential) application possibilities is also growing fast. In addition, data reliability assurance and data origin traceability become of utmost importance. In seed testing this first becomes apparent in the possibilities forFigure 1. Overview of the tool application process as presented in the recently published Guideline using advanced algorithms, and especially theadvanced technology applications for seed testing: computer visionuse of artificial intelligence in image-based analysis. As these developments have a large impact on ISTA seed tests as well as on the seed technologists performing these tests, ATC works on understanding the technologies, collecting and publishing information as well as initiating discussions on the topic from both a technical and an ISTA perspective. In line with this, the ATC initiates and participates in ISTA Special Projects on the application and exploration of new seed testing opportunities, in collaboration with other ISTA Technical Committees (TCOM). Furthermore, the Committee organises workshops and seminars on the use of advanced and new technologies.Currently, the ATC is working on imaging technologies (such as 3-D X-ray and multispectral imaging), mathematical modelling and artificial intelligence, and exploring molecular technologies in relation to seed testing. Beside this, ATC members have joined ISTA working groups with members of other TCOMs and the ISTA Executive Committee (ECOM).Highlights of the Year (January 2024 to present)Almost a tradition now, the Mathematical Modelling working group once again organised seminars at the 2024 Annual Meeting in Cambridge, UK and at the 34th ISTA CongressFigure 2.
