In recent years, the agricultural sector has faced increasing regulatory pressures, particularly in Europe, where microplastics are under scrutiny. The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has introduced restrictions through the REACH regulation, prompting companies to innovate. At Michelman, we view this as an opportunity to lead in sustainable agricultural solutions.
Sustainable innovation has always been one of my passions. With more than 30 years of experience in bioscience materials, I’ve seen how regulatory shifts can spark meaningful change. Our recent focus on microplastic-free (MPF) seed coatings reflects this. The challenge was to match the performance of traditional synthetic coatings while staying cost competitive. By leveraging bio-based materials from renewable plant sources, we developed wax emulsions and binders with enhanced flow, abrasion resistance, and reduced dust-off — essential for high-performance seed coatings.
The results have been encouraging. Our bio-based film coatings now deliver performance that rivals or surpasses conventional synthetic options. Our product portfolio includes tailored MPF and biodegradable wax emulsions, binders, and seed coating polymers designed for crops like corn, soybeans, and sunflowers.
Staying ahead of evolving regulations is essential. While North America hasn’t fully aligned with European standards, awareness is growing about how reducing plastic residues can improve soil structure and enhance long-term productivity. I believe MPF technologies will play a key role in creating more resilient farming systems.
One of the most rewarding aspects of this work has been collaborating with Michelman’s talented team of experts in sustainable materials, agricultural formulations, and seed coatings. Their dedication has been vital to our success in developing MPF wax emulsions and seed coating polymers from scratch.
Our investment in a new seed lab further underscores our commitment to innovation. This facility allows us to continually refine and enhance our solutions, keeping us at the forefront of sustainable seed coating technology.
For me, our work is deeply personal. We’re not just developing products—we’re contributing to a healthier, more sustainable agricultural future. Leading Michelman’s R&D efforts has been an honor, and I’m proud of the progress we’ve made. While there’s more to do, I’m excited about the meaningful changes we’re driving for our customers, our planet, and future generations.
