Kenneth R. Hartman Jr., a corn farmer from Waterloo, Illinois, officially began his term as president of the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) this week.

During media meetings, Hartman outlined the economic challenges currently facing corn growers, emphasizing his commitment to advocating for a comprehensive farm bill, expanding market opportunities, and addressing the impact of tariffs on agricultural supplies that are passed down to farmers.

Hartman also highlighted the importance of extending consumer access to higher ethanol blends. He believes that building strong relationships will be crucial to achieving these goals.

“My theme as president is ‘Building Bridges,’” Hartman explained in a NCGA news release “We need to strengthen our existing partnerships while developing new relationships with organizations both within and outside of agriculture. Additionally, it’s essential to engage policymakers and leaders who may not represent rural areas but still benefit indirectly from the work of farmers. I firmly believe that coalition building is one of the most effective ways to drive progress.”

As a fifth-generation farmer, Hartman operates his family farm alongside his wife Anita, mother Joann, and daughter Amanda. He brings extensive advocacy experience to his role, having served on the NCGA board for six years in various leadership positions. Hartman is also a past president of the Illinois Corn Growers Association and former chairman of the Illinois Corn Marketing Board. Additionally, he is involved in the Illinois Leadership Council for Agricultural Education.

In 2021, Prairie Farmer magazine recognized Hartman with the prestigious Master Farmer award, acknowledging his excellence in agricultural production and dedication to family and community service.

Hartman assumes leadership at NCGA as corn growers across the Corn Belt face rising input costs and declining commodity prices. He plans to prioritize advancing ethanol legislation, collaborating with U.S. officials to expand international markets, and exploring new uses for corn to address these challenges.

NCGA’s board elects a president annually, with the term beginning in early October to coincide with the start of the organization’s fiscal year. Harold Wolle, the immediate past president from Minnesota, will now serve as chairman of the board.
