Recent finding address public concerns of ‘accidental spillage’ of GM crops.
To address public concerns about potential “accidental spillage” of GM crop seeds, Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (MAFF) has released a new report showing it has found no modified genes in related nearby species.
Japan has established stringent protocols to ensure the safe cultivation and consumption of GM crops. Based on annual surveys and reports on genetically modified (GM) crops, the new report is the latest in MAFF’s consistent demonstration that there is minimal to no risk of unintended mixing between GM and non-GM crops, and no threat to local biodiversity.
The report comes in response to ongoing public concerns regarding potential cross-pollination. To address lingering public apprehensions, MAFF has pledged to maintain vigilant monitoring and investigation of GM crops, including rapeseed, soybean, corn, and cotton, across the country.
