When it comes to crop protection, there’s a lot of concern going on in the world. Some areas of the world, like the EU, are even looking to minimize crop protection use to help achieve sustainability goals.
But, in the end, protection, such as seed treatments, are an important tool for growers to have to combat pests and diseases where traits might not exist.
“When you think about the most expensive pass through the field for a grower in the U.S. is when they plant,” says Jason Mize, U.S. seed treatment lead for Nufarm, during a Giant Views interview at the American Seed Trade Association’s CSS & Seed Expo. “No one would ever go out there and plan to build a house without pouring the proper foundation. Seed treatments are so important, and there’s sound science behind it as well.”
Particularly, seed treatments give crops the best possible start by fending off early soil- and seed-borne pests, as well as insects. Getting that protection in as early as possible helps protect growers’ seed investments.
For Mize and the team at Nufarm, they’ve been taking a harder look at diseases like soybean cyst nematode and, more importantly, sudden death syndrome (SDS) in soybean crops.
“The industry is hungry for other forms of controlling SDS,” Mize says. “We’re looking at different forms of controlling that fusarium in the soil for season-long control against SDS with products like Trunemco.”
And for pests like SDS, catching the disease early with a treatment can help prevent and protect soybean crops all season long.
