The Red Barn Myth

You may have seen an image of a little red barn and a farmer in overalls next to it before. Traditionally this image has been associated with agriculture, but that’s not the reality of modern industrial farming. With red barns a thing of the past, how is the old school image affecting how consumers view the world of agriculture?

On the Nov. 30 episode of Seed Speaks, we’re taking a closer look at what affect the red barn myth has on the agriculture industry. We’re joined by Ellen Goddard, professor in the Department of Resource Economics and Environmental Sociology at the University of Alberta, and Shayla Wourms, thinkAG manager for Ag in the Classroom.

Goddard’s current work includes consumer research, behavioural research with farmers, outfitters, veterinarians and others in food supply chains. She has had a long-standing focus on public trust in agriculture and how the use of new technologies, food safety incidents and animal disease outbreaks affect consumer attitudes and choices.

Wourms is a youth program specialist, grain farmer, and active volunteer. In her role with Ag in the Classroom she helps provide students with opportunities to learn about the agriculture industry, explore the multifaceted realm of agricultural careers, and gain an understanding of the diverse array of education and employment opportunities available in agriculture and food. Wourms farms with her husband, Nick, and his family at St. Walburg, Sask.

Join us on Nov. 30 at 12 p.m. CST on Seed World‘s Facebook,YouTube and LinkedIn pages to watch the discussion.
