Since the mid-1980’s Puerto Rico has served as a winter location for plant breeders and seed producers. Its warm climate and rich soils have helped accelerate the development of new hybrids and varieties. Illinois Crop Improvement started with hybrid corn growouts on one-quarter of an acre. While meeting the OECD post control requirements for hybrid corn the information was invaluable to seed producers regardless of the market. The farm expanded to other hybrid crops and now works with over fifteen crop kinds. One of the more unique roles for Illinois Crop has been in the area of trait introgression and continuous nurseries. Illinois Crop does not own seed, genetics or traits. As a third-party it protects intellectual property rights of all kinds as a host for plant breeders, seed producers and researchers.
During this session you’ll learn:
- Regulatory information for Puerto Rico
- Crops and Production Practices
- Services and Customer Assistance
- Seed Certification and Phytosanitary Services
