The Organic Research and Extension Initiative funded the $1.99 million grant, which will allow farmers, researchers and consumers to participate in breeding corn optimized for organic production. The research will test maize germplasm developed at the UI, with consumers providing feedback on the quality of grain and products made with the different strands of organic corn.
Kimberlee Kidwell, dean of the UI’s College of Agricultural, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences, called the grant evidence of “an outstanding partnership between the university, the state and the federal government to do important research that matters to people.”
