Class VII of the European UC Davis Plant Breeding Academy closed its fourth week in Ghent, Belgium according to a release. The week’s agenda included “mister” G by E, indirect selection, advanced experimental design, GG biplot, breeding with molecular markers, GWAS, association mapping, genomic selection, hybrid and breeding crosses predictions and more topics. The topics were presented to help breeders with developing new varieties.
The core instructors for week four included Alexandra Tomerius, Kendra Armstrong, Allen van Deynze and Jovan Djordjevic, as well as guest presenters Johan Peleman and Georg Roll. Djordjevic, UC Davis Plant Breeding academy director, shared during the Leadership and Management session his experience and knowledge when it comes to communicating with stakeholders when launching new varieties.
The class was also able to visit breeding companies located nearby. At the companies, which included Meijer, Rijk Zwaan and ILVO, students were able to participate in plant breeding discussions.
The week five session will take place in March in Almeria, Spain where a lot of vegetable seed company hubs are located. The core instructors that week are Rita Mumm, Rob Dirks, Alexandra Tomerius and Jovan Djordjevic.
