Today is National Cucumber Day and it is time to celebrate the hydrating, crunchy, green vegetable with three interesting facts about cucumbers.
Companies are innovating to create cucumbers that will have the traits needed to meet the future. The challenge is not to introduce a new trait, but to do it in a strong chassis.

The period in a country when there is little news is called the “silly season.” In many countries, this time period carries a reference to cucumbers. Cucumber is plagued by numerous pests and diseases such as powdery mildew, CVYV, CYSDV, downy mildew (DM) and several others.
“The biggest problems with ZYMV are caused in pumpkins and zucchini. However, smooth type cucumbers are the most vulnerable. They reduce the growth and yield of fruits,” says Radek Aust, executive manager, Moravo Seed. “That is why ZYMV resistance is important in addition to classical mould tolerance. For greenhouse cucumbers, due to the intensive growing in the shelters, it is necessary to monitor the whole set of resistance such as powdery mildew, ZYMV, CMV, CCu, CVYV, etc.”
