The idea that management is all about delegating doesn’t apply to what we do at 20/20 Seed Labs.
Over the past 15 years, my responsibilities have expanded from managing a single lab to overseeing operations across multiple locations. Yet, you’ll still find me at the bench, analyzing purity tests or resolving customer issues. This approach keeps me connected to our core operations and ensures I’m fully attuned to the demands of an industry that thrives on precision and accuracy.
Managing a seed lab is no ordinary leadership role; it requires the perfect blend of technical expertise and business insight. Every decision I make must align with accreditation standards while meeting customer expectations. Our lab operates under a suite of certifications — CFIA, ISTA, ISO — each adding layers of complexity to our quality management systems.
For instance, when we recently added potato regulatory testing to our accreditations, we didn’t isolate that knowledge. Instead, we integrated those elevated standards across the entire lab. This fosters consistency and bolsters customer trust, whether we’re performing a germination test or preparing an international shipping analysis.
Understanding the nuances of seed testing adds another layer of challenge. Take purity testing — it’s not just identifying what’s in a sample but tailoring results to the customer’s specific needs. Are they complying with state-specific regulations in the U.S.? Or navigating international phytosanitary rules? My team and I don’t just provide data; we offer consultative support to help clients make informed decisions.
Technology has revolutionized our processes but also introduced complexity. We’ve developed a custom lab management system to streamline workflows, catch errors, and manage data with precision. However, integrating these tools within a strict regulatory framework is no small feat. Emerging technologies like AI hold enormous potential but require widespread industry adoption to realize their full benefits.
Ultimately, my role is about people as much as seeds. I spend considerable time with customers, troubleshooting issues, monitoring accounts, and particularly navigating the intricacies of export testing, where my expertise is most impactful. Internally, I focus on team engagement, from leadership meetings to informal check-ins to ensure smooth operations.
Every day brings new challenges, but one principle guides me: staying involved. Whether I’m making high-level decisions or analyzing a sample at my purity desk, I believe the best management starts with understanding the work itself. This hands-on approach isn’t just a personal philosophy — it’s the foundation of our company’s success.
