The North German Chambers of Agriculture ranks Valerio, a new tetraploid perennial ryegrass, as “the best variety in Germany in the late-ripening group.”
According to Deutsche Saatveredelung AG (DSV), Valerio marks an important step forward in forage grass breeding for the company.
Trials conducted by the federal plant variety office have certified its low susceptibility to rust, low tendency to winter-kill and cold stress as well as good persistence. These results confirm that the variety is also suitable for other major grassland regions in Germany.
Valerio is rated as yielding rel. 105 in dry matter yields and as much as rel. 109 in the first cut. It is particularly suitable for moorland sites. Valerio is being tested in numerous international official and private trials. Preliminary findings confirm the German results.
“Valerio is another candidate on track to becoming a major, new and very high-yielding variety in the DSV portfolio not only for Germany but also for international markets,” reports the company.
