BASF Announces its 10-Year Outlook

On April 20, BASF announced its 10-year outlook on agriculture innovations for future generations. This outlook includes new pipeline updates with focuses on improving agriculture outcomes in major crops, such as wheat, canola, soybean, corn, cotton and different vegetables, while also focusing on minimizing the impact of climate change on the environment.

BASF estimates its peak sales potential of more than €7.5 billion for its new pipeline projects, and says that BASF’s products and solutions for society are continuing to grow.

“Innovation in agriculture is essential to enable sustainable food production. We need to find the right balance for better yield, yield produced in ways that meet the demands of future generations, has minimal impact on the environment and helps farmers make a living,” said Livio Tedeschi, president of BASF Agricultural Solutions, in a release. “Our innovations enable both more productive and more sustainable farming, key levers identified by the United Nations and incorporated in their Sustainable Development Goals. At BASF Agricultural Solutions, we made this a priority and committed to clear and measurable targets to boost sustainable agriculture by 2030.”

New innovations include:

Preserving biodiversity by combining Ideltis hybrid wheat, crop protection and digital tools in Europe. Ideltis is expected to be launched in the second half of the decade, but will be supported by xarvio’s digital farming solutions and crop protection such as Revysol, Axalion, and Luximo.

Precision application and efficient land use through a diverse, tailored soybean innovation pipeline for Latin American farmers. Specifically, BASF expects Latin American farmers to have access to Revysol and Xemium -based mixtures in the mid-decade to combat Asian Soybean Rust and help manage resistance.

Innovations in North American canola production to strengthen farmers’ climate resilience. North American growers can see improved InVigor canola products which will feature herbicide tolerance — expected for field-use by mid-decade. In addition, a new seed treatment called Vercoras will provide seeds with broad-spectrum protection against diseases and pests like blackleg and flea beetle.

Reducing emissions in farming with climate smart solutions for rice production in Asia. BASF is working on new innovations for Asia to reduce emissions and water usage in rice cultivation — specifically, two herbicide tolerant traits that will be used in direct seeded rice hybrid systems as an alternative to paddy rice. Clearfield Rice System is already available, while Provisia Rice System is expected for a mid-decade launch.

Supporting local, indoor food production with innovations in vegetable seed and biological crop protection. BASF is expanding new greenhouses for use of breeding vegetable seed varieties under the Nunhems brand. In addition, biosolutions such as Velifer BioInsecticide and Serifel BioFungicide are going to launch worldwide, including in the EU, China and Latin America over the coming years.
