Brent Collins Says the Idea of the ISSB is Catching On

Brent Collins, Seeds Canada board member and head of seeds & traits at BASF Canada, sat down with Marc Zienkiewicz at the recent Seeds Canada Semi-Annual Meeting in Ottawa, Ont., in late November, to talk about progress made since the organization’s annual meeting in Winnipeg in July.

“I think, since that meeting, there’s been a lot of time where we’ve allowed members and other industry folks to digest a lot of the information that was shared,” he said.

One area he says progress has been made in is the idea for an independent standards setting body, or ISSB, which would institute a robust governance structure to maintain balanced representation, informed consensus-based decision making and transparency in the Canadian seed system.

The proposed ISSB would be to “look at the regulations from all sides and all viewpoints” before being sent to government for adoption.

“It’s just really interesting to see how receptivity to that has has changed over the last four to five months,” Collins said.
