Feds Launch Consultation Process on Future CAP Funding Agreement

The Canadian government has kicked off the start of the consultation period for the Next Agricultural Policy Framework, the government says in a news release on June 3. The new framework will replace the current five-year, $3 billion Canadian Agricultural Partnership (CAP), which expires on March 31, 2023.

“Our farmers and processors depend on a solid foundation of support and investment to help grow their businesses. We look forward to hearing from them throughout this engagement process as the Next Agricultural Policy Framework takes shape, and our industry continues to recover and compete globally,” Neil Ellis, parliamentary secretary to the minister of agriculture and agri-food, says in the release.

The current CAP program provides key financial support for agriculture programs and services which are tailored to meet regional needs, the release notes. CAP includes a number of federal programs along with 60:40 cost-shared programs with the provincial/territorial governments.

Consultations started on June 3, 2021 and will continue through to the spring of 2022. To contribute and see updates on the consultations you can visit the government’s website throughout 2021 and 2022.
