How Important is a First Impression?

It’s always important to make a first impression — are you making one with your seed?

Everyone is amply aware of how important first impressions are. We have all been successful with a first impression, and we have probably all had that sinking feeling when we did not succeed in making a great first impression.

However, we also know that we can come back from a bad first impression, because we have plenty of tools in our tool kit to overcome it. But wow, is it ever easier if we can make that first impression amazing!

As we look ahead to the spring planting season, everyone is looking to offer growers greater value through improved seed performance. Everyone is confident in their seed, confident in the results it will generate and confident they will have a satisfied client at harvest. Have you thought about your seed’s first impression? What is that feeling when your customer opens that first bag?

Wouldn’t it be great if you could create a “WOW” feeling?

In a market filled with brands and seed that all look basically the same, to be impressive, to truly differentiate your seed, you need to be recognizable. All the hard work you put into ensuring the best possible seed is in the bag, so first impressions are important – make sure they remember you, make sure they know your brand and make sure they keep coming back for more. From the moment the bag is opened, with just one glance, show your customers that they are buying value and performance.

Gloss treatments can help you to create this “WOW” feeling, but they do much more than provide exceptional luster. “We are seeing increased interest in the application of powder gloss as a drying agent, like talc, to help dry seeds faster,” says Standard Colors Agro Group’s, John Kibbee. “The gloss that is applied to seeds provides an increased absorption capacity for carrying additional fungicides, growth stimulants, biologicals and all the other agronomically beneficial products we want to apply to seed, creating far higher value,” he continues. “In addition, gloss treatments provide better slip and flow in the seeder and improve plantability. Better plantability leads to better field stand, and ultimately better yield.”

“We want to help customers create an obvious brand value statement with a high quality and unique look, allowing their seed to be seen for the trait value contained within,” says Standard Colors Agro Group’s, Kevin Brost. “When buying any product, first impressions are very important, and it is no different with seed. As seed value has increased and the number of internal traits, and externally added technologies, increase it has become increasingly important to reflect those qualities and differentiations visually.”

It is very difficult to ask for what you want when you don’t know it exists. Kibbee and Brost work with clients in the U.S. and Canada to create customized solutions for their specific needs. This leads to formulations and treating processes to assure performance, enhance your product and build your brand.

“We pride ourselves on understanding the customer and working with them to create a product that is as unique as the seed in the bag,” Brost says. “Great seed should be obvious. We make seed look and perform better, one customer at a time.”
