Seed Treatments: Not All Created Equal

Have you ever thought about things that look alike but wondered if there are differences? For example, an alligator vs. a crocodile or a turtle vs. a tortoise. These animals look similar but are different in either the shape of their snout, as in the case of the alligator and crocodile, or they live in the water as opposed to on land, as with the turtle and tortoise example.

The same can be said about seed treatments. They may look similar on the seed, but they’re not all created equal. The differences could affect a grower’s return on investment, so it’s important to understand what sets Syngenta seed treatments apart from generics and competitor brands.

Innovation with Integrity

For 40 years, Syngenta Seedcare has been at the forefront of seed treatment research and innovation, making deliberate, positive advancements in seed treatment technology. Syngenta seed treatments are more than just the active ingredients on a seed and are comprised of products, application, services, and stewardship insights that ensure a good experience for resellers and growers.

Syngenta seed treatments are thoroughly tested in various equipment to ensure:

• Good treatment uniformity

• Accurate dose per seed

• Good seed flow

• Low dust-off

• Accurate planting

Innovation with integrity is what keeps Syngenta Seedcare at the forefront of seed treatment research, making deliberate, positive advancements in seed treatment technology.

Saltro is one of the latest technologies to help growers improve their yield potential.

The Latest Syngenta Seedcare Innovation

Saltro fungicide seed treatment received federal registration in 2019 and delivers upgraded Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS) protection. 2019 trials reinforced what five years of field development has shown — Saltro delivers a yield advantage over older technology through superior SDS protection and robust nematode activity, without causing early-season stress.

“Saltro provides superior SDS protection without the stress, and that means growers won’t have to give up early-season plant health to get powerful SDS protection,” said Paul Oklesh, product lead for Syngenta Seedcare. “With Saltro, we’re setting a new standard for SDS and Soybean Cyst Nematode protection. Better early season protection means less impact from SDS late in the season. This early protection helps soybean varieties to look and perform their best, resulting in higher potential yield.”

Multiple years of Syngenta, university and third-party field trials have confirmed the ability of Saltro to defend against SDS and nematodes without causing early-season plant stress. Specifically:

  • Across five years of trials throughout the U.S., Saltro provided an average 4 bushel per acre (bu/A) yield advantage over ILEVO1. In 86% of those trials, Saltro delivered a yield increase over ILEVO.
  • In a 2019 University of Minnesota trial based in Rosemount, Minn., Saltro provided an average 16.9 bu/A yield increase over ILEVO and a 22.3 bu/A increase over the check.

By providing growers powerful SDS protection and strong nematode activity that promotes uniform emergence, Saltro demonstrates the commitment of Syngenta to accelerating innovation and addressing increasing grower challenges. Syngenta invests in technologies to bring about lasting change for sustainable agriculture, and Saltro is one of the latest technologies to help growers improve their yield potential.
