The University of Manitoba is strengthening its research in special crops by hiring Loveleen Kaur Dhillon as its first-ever agronomist in residence for special crops. This five-year position, funded by Manitoba Crop Alliance (MCA), is set to redefine how Manitoba tackles agronomic challenges in crops like corn, sunflower, and flax.
Dhillon is a Canadian Plant Breeding Innovation Scholar, receiving her scholarship in 2023.
MCA identified a critical gap in research for these smaller-acreage but high-potential crops and created this role to boost applied agronomy research in the province. Over the next five years, the goal is to deliver actionable, recommendation-driven results that empower farmers and drive innovation in the special crops industry.
“This is a game-changer for the crops we represent,” says Jonothan Hodson, MCA vice-chair and corn crop committee delegate. “It’s not always easy to fund impactful research for smaller-acreage crops, but this role ensures they remain productive, sustainable options for Manitoba’s farmers.”
Dhillon, who earned her PhD in plant breeding and agronomy from the University of Saskatchewan, brings a wealth of expertise and enthusiasm to the role. “I’m excited to engage with Manitoba’s special crops industry and create a research program that delivers tangible returns for farmers,” she says.
The agronomist in residence will focus on applied research to uncover best management practices for corn, sunflower, and flax. The position also emphasizes knowledge transfer, ensuring that findings are shared with farmers and industry stakeholders to maximize impact.
“This hiring represents a milestone in our efforts to close the research gap for these crops,” says Katherine Stanley, MCA’s research program manager for special crops. “Loveleen’s experience and energy make her the perfect fit to lead this initiative and take Manitoba’s special crops industry to the next level.”
Martin Scanlon, Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences at the University of Manitoba, highlights the broader significance of the role: “Loveleen will not only conduct practical, farm-level research and share best practices with producers but also mentor the next generation of agricultural leaders. We’re thrilled to have her on board for this pivotal role.”
