In accordance with Regulation (Eu) 2021/1873 Of The European Parliament And Of The Council, dated October 20, 2021, the European Union has extended the protection periods for 4,302 plant variety titles.
This amendment, under Regulation (EU) 2021/1873, directly impacts species such as Asparagus officinalis L., as well as flower bulbs, woody small fruits, and woody ornamentals, according to a press release from the Community Plant Variety Office (CPVO).
The CPVO is responsible for implementing these extended protection periods, which now cover over 4,000 varieties within the relevant species group protected under the EU system. In 2023, the strengthened legal framework provided extended protection for 453 new plant varieties, highlighting the broad impact of this regulation.
This extension allows breeders to retain exclusive rights to their varieties for a longer time, fostering sustained investment and innovation in plant breeding. These measures are crucial for addressing significant challenges such as climate change and food security by promoting the development of resilient and diverse plant varieties.
By reaffirming the EU’s commitment to agricultural innovation and sustainability, this legislative enhancement creates a supportive environment for the continued advancement of the plant breeding industry, promoting a greener and more sustainable future.
